Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek Review

About the Book: Popular: Vintage Wisdom for the Modern Geek is a 272-page book by Maya Van Wagenen. It was published on April 15th, 2014 and has a Lexile measurepop of 730.
This book is about one eighth grade girl’s quest to find out what popularity really is and if popularity tips from the fifties still apply today.

Review: Popular is a funny and fairly enjoyable book that shows that popularity really is just learning to say “hi.” Although, this book was quite humorous and was insanely interesting for a nonfiction book it had several downfalls. For one, there was an excessive amount of cussing and inappropriate language.  Also, there was some inappropriate content that didn’t need to be included in the book. Despite this book’s flaws it was still enjoyable and kept me going. I love how the book Maya uses as a popularity guide is from the fifties and no matter how crazy the guide got she always followed through. So, does Maya find popularity, or does she become known as the girl who wore a girdle? You’ll just have to read it and find out.
